February 2024 What's in a Word? by Fran Joyce

I love words, and I enjoy learning new words from around the world. Sometimes they express feelings or describe a situation we don’t have a word for in English. Words can tell you a lot about what different cultures find important. In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’ve selected ten words associated with love and happiness.

Cwtch (noun - Welsh) a loving cuddle, snuggle, or hug that makes someone feel safe and happy.

Forelsket (Verb – Danish and Norwegian) – to experience the euphoric, joyous feeling that proceeds falling in love.

Gezellig (adj. -Dutch) – the coziness, fun, or warm fuzzy feeling you get when you are around the people you love.

Gunnen (verb – Dutch) To find happiness in someone else’s happiness because you love them so much.

Kalos (adj. – Greek) – Linguistic magic that makes ordinary things feel extraordinary and makes you feel like you are walking on sunshine.

Naz (noun - Hebrew) – the pride that comes from knowing you are loved no matter what you do.

Redamancy (n. English) – the act of loving the one that loves you; a love returned in full.

Trouvaille (noun – French) – a chance encounter with something wonderful.

Vernorexia (noun – Latin) a romantic mood inspired by spring.

Yuanfen (noun – Chinese) Two people who are meant to be together: destiny.
