First Watch: A Review by Terry Kish

I love breakfast. Experts tell us it’s the most important meal of the day, and for me, that saying is true. The days when I eat a good breakfast go much more smoothly than the days that start without it.

One of my favorite places to indulge my morning cravings is First Watch in South Fayette. With fresh, delicious classic breakfast favorites, omelets and frittatas, power bowls, griddle, and seasonal items, the food never disappoints!

How does starting your day with a Bacado® (bacon, avocado, and Monterey Jack cheese) or Chile Chorizo (chorizo, avocado, green chilies, roasted onions, Cheddar and Monterey Jack) omelet or Frittata Rustica (kale, house-roasted Crimini mushrooms, onions and tomatoes topped with Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese) sound? Or maybe one of their four types of Eggs Benedict – Classic, Florentine, BLT, or Smoked Salmon?

If you’re interested in a griddle choice, First Watch offers Multigrain or Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Belgian Waffles and French Toast. If you’re in the mood for a healthy option, consider Avocado Toast, Steel-Cut Oatmeal, or a Power WrapTM (egg whites, turkey, spinach, house-roasted Cremini mushrooms, and Mozzarella in a sun-dried tomato-basil tortilla).

To confuse your taste buds even more, First Watch also has a seasonal menu, which this fall included features like Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal (ancient grain oats slow cooked with pureed pumpkin and topped with pepitas and dried cranberries) and a Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast (two eggs plus one spiced Pumpkin Pancake and a Jones Dairy Farm grilled savory chicken sausage patty).

On my most recent visit, after agonizing over the menu, a friend and I eventually chose the BLT Eggs Benedict and a Pumpkin Pancake. Portions are very generous, so we were able to share, which was an excellent decision! The BLT Eggs Benedict was amazing, with two perfectly cooked poached eggs, crispy bacon, tomato, avocado, and lemon-dressed arugula on toasted ciabatta, and covered with hollandaise. The plate sized spiced Pumpkin Pancake, served with warm maple syrup, was fluffy and light with just the right amount of pumpkin and spice, and absolutely delicious!

Not a breakfast person? No worries! The lunch menu at First Watch includes a variety of creative sandwiches like the Monterey Club (turkey, bacon, avocado, organic mixed greens, tomato, Monterey Jack, and mayo on sourdough), and Baja Turkey Burger (a white-meat turkey patty with avocado, organic mixed greens, housemade pico de gallo, mayo, and Horseradish Havarti on a brioche bun). Salad choices are equally interesting, with Superfood Kale (kale and organic mixed greens with house made maple-roasted carrots, warm chicken breast, dried cranberries, slivered almonds, and shredded Parmesan cheese tossed in a maple-lemon vinaigrette) and Chicken Avocado Chop (chopped romaine and arugula, chicken breast, avocado, tomatoes, corn, black beans, Feta cheese, and crispy tortilla chips with a citrus chipotle dressing) being just two of their offerings.

Whether your choice is breakfast, brunch, or lunch, you can’t go wrong at First Watch!
