The World Central Kitchen Cookbook by Jose Andres: A Review by Fran Joyce

I’m reviewing a wonderful holiday gift, The World Central Kitchen Cookbook: Feeding Humanity, Feeding Hope by José Andrés.

Since 2010, the global non-profit, World Central Kitchen (WCK), founded by chef and humanitarian José Andrés has prepared hundreds of millions of fresh, nourishing meals for people impacted by natural disasters, and manmade conflicts.

Proceeds from this book’s sales go to help fund the work of the World Central Kitchen.

By buying this book, you become a small part of the wonderful work being done by the World Central Kitchen. You get recipes from chefs and celebrities from around the world, and you also get to read about other countries, their people, culture, and native foods.

Each recipe has a story. These stories are arranged in categories such as, empathy, urgency, adaptation, hope, community, resilience, joy, and building blocks.

Stepen Colbert wrote the  touching foreword praising the people of the WCK and their commitment to make a difference.

In addition to ‘boots on the ground’ in devastated regions, the WCK also provides other relief agencies with area/region appropriate inexpensive to make recipes. Chef’s motto is “build a longer table.” He continually strives to provide more people with life saving food and soul saving compassion. Inclusion is a simple, but powerful act of kindness.

Everyone matters regardless of the color of their skin, religion, ethnicity, income level, who they love, or their gender identity.

I haven’t tried any of the recipes yet, but I’m loving the stories, and the fabulous photography. I bought this book for myself and ordered one as a special Christmas gift for a friend. You should, too.

With prices going up and charities stretched to their limits, buying a gift that achieves two purposes feels like a no brainer. Give yourself and/or a friend exciting recipes and stories from around the world while helping the mission of the World Central Kitchen!
