Step Away With Me: A Poem by Fran Joyce

Step away with me from the cancer spreading before our eyes.

A momentary escape to paradise - somewhere greed and ego forgot to go.

Dance with me in the moonlight free at last from the filthy lies,

Misplaced anger, petty grievances, and hypocritical moral undertow.

Step away with me from this material sinkhole; imagine for a while

Breathing clean air and swimming in an ocean they’ve yet to pollute.

Free from mass consumption and the burden of constantly being in style

We’ll celebrate lines and wrinkles earned; proof that aging is a noble pursuit.

Step away with me from the madness that rewards cruelty and exclusion

Stripping babies from loving parents and destroying the world we know.

Let’s open our eyes and navigate through this manufactured confusion

Before we continue to fight the fight we know we can’t ignore or forego.

Step away with me; rest and regroup for the war we must win for our survival.

Our souls, our aspirations; the dreams we hold so dear hang precariously in question.

March with me; sing with me. Let our voices be heard. Vote with me to start the revival

Fight beside me to protect the idea that human rights are more than a suggestion.
