Go, Went
Probably every child follows the general pattern and says “goed.”
Quite a sensible assumption!
How can went be the past tense of go?
In Old English, gan had an irregular past: eode. Eode also wasn’t related to gan! It is cognate with Latin eo, and will be familiar to Spanish and Portuguese speakers.
But the original past tense of gan has been lost to time.
Eventually, for whatever mysterious reason, eode fell out of favor and went replaced it.
Went was the past tense of wend.
As in . . . “he wends through the woods on winding paths.”
But modern wend now has a regular ed ending. . . . Thus, he wended through the woods, if he went in the past!
