The heavens opened wide and water spewed like vomit.
We ran for shelter; lightning obliterating the cover of night.
Frantic figures scurrying like rats fleeing the devil incarnate.
Cockroaches offended by scrutiny from an unexpected light.
Rivers rose, oceans devoured the shore, as Levees gave way.
Thunder drowned out attempts to pray, repent, or preach.
Our voices thrown back, silenced, in the unrelenting fray.
Rejected by the storm. Salvation hurtling out of reach.
We begged for an ark that wasn’t coming or a rainbow covenant.
Reassurances from above to deliver us from danger.
Messages of love, forgiveness, reconciliation heaven sent.
If we learned to love our neighbor and welcome the stranger.
Gestures of supplication; humility offered in haste,
Lip service to persuade the Omnipotent power
To let the waters recede. Sins forgiven; Sins erased,
Lessons forgotten. Transgressions resumed until the next fatal shower.
