For many parts of the world, winter is here in full force. By the time we’ve shoveled the white stuff in Pittsburgh, we’re frozen and ready to curl up with a good book until Mother Nature decides she’s had her fun for the year.

The Boys in the Light by Nina Willner is a nonfiction World War II story about survival, faith, and brotherhood. The author’s father, Eddie, was a sixteen-year-old boy among millions of Jews in Europe rounded up and forced to labor in concentration camps. Eddie, along with his father and his best friend, Mike, fought to survive the camps and hopefully one day escape. The 3rd Armored Division tankers led by 23-year-old Elmer Hovland was composed of boys not much older than Eddie. Battle hardened by the horrors they saw, these young men weren’t prepared when two emaciated young men stepped out of the woods with their tattooed arms raised. It was a moment they would remember forever.

We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution by Jill Lepore – The author, a Harvard professor of history and law explains why our constitution is so difficult to amend and why our founding fathers designed it to resist change but also allow change without violence. Nearly 12,00 amendments have been introduced in Congress since 1789, but only twenty-seven have been ratified.

The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald by John U. Bacon – On November 9, 1975, the storm of the century hit the Great lakes. The Edmund Fitzgerald and 29 crewmen ended up in a watery grave at the bottom of Lake Superior. Bacon conducted over one hundred interviews with family members and former crewmates to learn the personal stories behind the tragedy, details about the sailor’s lives, the aftermath of their deaths, and the enduring legacy captured in song by Gordon Lightfoot.

Love, Mom by Iliana Xander – Mackenzie Casper is a brilliant student. Her mother is the best-selling author of dark twisted thrillers with a loyal global fan base.
